Rome monuments and sights

Castel Sant'Angelo

Castel Sant'Angelo Built on the right bank of the Tiber, between 135-139, as a mausoleum for Roman Emperor Hadrian. In the following centuries, the mausoleum was converted into a military fortress. The popes fortified the mausoleum, which becomes a castle, since 14th century. Sant'Angelo also served as a prison. Now the castle is a museum.

Colosseum
Colosseum In the amphitheater of Flavius, better known as the Colosseum, bloody battles between gladiators and against ferocious animals were once held. Divided into four levels of seats, it could hold at least fifty thousand spectators. The Colosseum is the most important monument of ancient Rome.

Forum Romanum
Forum Romanum The Roman Forum was the political, economic, and religious centre of ancient Rome, the site of temples, tribunals and other buildings used for public and private business.

Pantheon
Pantheon One of the most magnificent Roman buildings, which has survived almost intact up to the present day. Dedicated in 609 to St. Mary ad Martyres, it holds the tombs of the painter Raphael and of the Kings of Italy.

Piazza Navona
Piazza Navona Piazza Navona recalls, with its perimeter, its original use for athletic games. In its center rises the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Borromini built the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, which stands in front of Bernini's Fountain.

Piazza Venezia
Piazza Venezia At the foot of the Capitoline Hill opens out Piazza Venezia, which takes its name from the monumental palace ordered by Pope Paul II, who was of Venetian origin, in the mid-15th century. The Piazza is home of Trajan's Column, probably the world's greatest column from antiquity.

Spanish Steps
Spanish Steps Beyond the Barcaccia Fountain rise the beautiful Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti, or the Spanish Steps. It was finished by 1726 and became a favorite rendezvous for artists and their models. Still today it is one of the most popular meeting-places in Rome for foreigners and Italians alike.

St John in Lateran
St John in Lateran St. John in Lateran is the Cathedral of Rome and one of the four major in. It is across the street from the Holy Stairs. These are the stairs that Jesus walked up to be judged by Pilot. They were brought back from the Holy Land by St. Helen. You are only allowed up these stairs on your knees.

St Mary Major
St Mary Major St. Mary Major is one of the four major basilicas in Rome, and the largest church in the world dedicated to Our Lady. It was built, as the legend goes, in 352 B.C. after an appearance of the Blessed Virgin. The legend is commemorated every year on August 5th, when white rose petals are dropped from the dome during the festal Mass.

St Peter's Basilica and Square
St Peters Basilica Saint Peter's Basilica ranks second among the five major basilicas of Rome and is the largest church in the world. One of the holiest sites of Christendom, it is believed to be the site of crucifixion and burial of Saint Peter. The open space before the basilica was redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Trastevere
Trastevere The area of Trastevere is ideal for a walk through narrow streets, squares and colours that still maintain an authentic Roman character. Trastevere was the first district established on the right bank of the Tiber and was inhabited by artisans, fishermen and merchants. Trastevere offers a great variety of restaurants and bars for a fun evening.

Trevi Fountain
Trevi Fountain The spectacular effect of the Trevi Fountain is not revealed gradually; none of the streets leading to it is in axis with the fountain itself. It is rather the sound of the water that suggests its proximity. Designed in the 18th century by architect Nicola Salvi, the Trevi Fountain is the celebration of water as a symbol of life, health and change.

Villa Borghese
Villa Borghese Villa Borghese is the most famous villa both for its dimensions and the various ways of access to the city. This hostel was the best one we stayed at in Italy! It was clean, safe, quiet and the staff was great! The location is perfect - it was close to the train station so it made it easy to ride the metro. I highly recommend this place!
